Artistic gymnast Valeria Maksiota, 24, moved to Israel from Ukraine on her own five years ago. In 2011, she won 27 medals in international competitions, 13 of them gold medals.

Her performance at the European Championships in Brussels in May assured her of a spot on the Israeli delegation to the 2012 Games, though she’d torn her Achilles tendon at London test finals in January.
